Staying Healthy
There are two projects that help people be healthier.
Access to Sport
Access to sport helps people with learning disabilities to use
ordinary sport and fitness centres and join sports groups with the
support of a long term 'buddy'. We employ a person with a learning
disability to lead and inspire this work.
Several established buddy arrangements exist and more people are
being introduced to each other. Posters along with visits to
colleges and sports centres have produced a steady flow of people
who want to buddy with people from Grapevine.
If you'd like to get involved contact Danny on 024 7663
1040.
If you have a learning disability you are 58 times more likely
to die by the age of 50.
The H team
The H team is made up of people who have learning disabilities.
They support other people to have better health. They can
offer:-
-
Healthy lifestyles training
-

subjects
-

-
Health buddies to support you and help you to speak up
Paul's story
53 year old Paul, a health buddy, has not been to the dentist
since he left school. Tracey Smith (Dental Health Eductaion
Officer) invited him to look around and use the dental equipment at
a local practice to help him to overcome his anxieties. Lyn Wales
who is a dentist at the practice answered questions and Paul has
now arranged his first check up in a very long time.
If you would like to talk to the H team contact us on 024 7663
1040.
The H team have produced a series of photostory leaflets about
using health services. Please see the publications and resources
section for a full list which are free to download.
