The Social Change Initiative Gathering on Movement Building

All last week Grapevine CEO, Clare Wightman, was in South Africa.  The mentoring trip was thanks to The Social Change Initiative based in Belfast.

Last Wednesday’s #Activismthatworks event at the Isivivana Centre in Cape Town included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu as guest of honour. On the podium Opal Ayo, co-founder of  Black Lives Matter, explained how #BlackLivesMatter started: a black teenager was stalked and murdered and the killer acquitted – but outrage went well beyond that murder (or the next or the next). “We created something that began to raise the consciousness of people”
